About Allegany State Forest

Allegany State Forest spans roughly 65,000 acres in Cattaraugus County in the southwestern corner of New York. The forest occupies part of the Allegheny Plateau, featuring rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, streams, and small lakes. It is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and provides critical habitat for species such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous songbirds. Historically, the area was logged and farmed but has since reverted to forest, with active stewardship to maintain healthy ecosystems and recreational access. Visitors enjoy hiking, mountain biking, camping, fishing, horseback riding, snowmobiling in winter, and paddling on several lakes and rivers. Notable landmarks in the forest include the Red House area, the Quaker Run Trails system, and Rock City, a large sandstone outcrop with caves and unique rock formations. With well-maintained campgrounds and over 200 miles of multi-use trails, Allegany State Forest draws outdoor enthusiasts year-round. Its remote location and relatively low development offer a wilderness experience close to urban centers like Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Seasonal activities vary, with vibrant fall foliage viewing and winter snow sports adding to the forest’s appeal. The Allegany State Park nearby complements the forest with additional recreational and lodging options.
